St. Gertraud, in the midst of the Stilfser Joch National Park
Altitude: 1,519 m
On a hillside at the end of the valley lies the small, idyllic village of St. Gertraud. The small church, which is dedicated to St. Gertrude, rises majestically above the Falschauer valley and offers stunning views. St. Gertraud is the most natural and pristine of all the local villages.
In particular the ancient farms that still stand on the steep mountain meadows and continue to be worked with great care bear witness to this. Perhaps the best known amongst them are the Pilshöfe farmhouses. Here in St. Gertraud we are in the midst of the Stilfser Joch National Park, and in a specially created national park visitor center you can learn from experts about the features of the local flora and fauna and the importance of protecting the natural landscape. On the left hand side of the valley are our illustrious giant trees.
The 2000-year-old ancient Ulten Valley larches are among the most spectacular natural monuments in the region and a source of wonder.
